La democràcia arriba l'abril
This cycle aims to revisit and rethink the so-called carnation revolution, in Portugal, from a broad and transversal perspective. We will do this through the work of two film directors, young, but already internationally recognized.
Both show a concern to rethink the culture and identity of a part of Portugal that is struggling to free itself from a context anchored in a conservative and nostalgic tradition, as opposed to a more universal and cosmopolitan one.
We will begin with a social and historical contextualization of what today continues to represent the revolution of April 1974. Then, a short film will allow us to understand the social and political transition from the time of the New State regime until the arrival of democracy, in April 1974. Next, we will see a feature film that makes evident the scars left by the turbulent times following the arrival of democracy in the daily life of one of the most populous areas of Porto, the neighborhood from Aleixo
The session will end with a short film, O Nosso Reino, based on the work of the same name by Valter Hugo Mãe, whose protagonists are mentalities structured by the philosophies imposed by the New State.
Between each projection there will be a temporary separator, for short interventions, and a debate with the two guests will be left for the end. The projected works, of which we attach the synopsis, will be subtitled in Spanish.
