‘No Normal’ Conference

‘No Normal’ conference, part of a series of talks on the same topic taking place across the country this week, by Jordi Solé | April 15th at 6:00 PM

No Normal is a talk by Jordi Solé on the global energy crisis triggered by the conflict with Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical point in the world energy system. A clear and contextualized analysis to understand why the current situation is not an anomaly, but rather a symptom of a deeply vulnerable system.

In this talk, Jordi Solé analyzes the causes and implications of the current energy crisis resulting from the escalation of the conflict with Iran, with special attention to the strategic role of the Strait of Hormuz, through which a crucial share of the oil that fuels the global economy passes. Far from a short-term reading, the session proposes understanding this episode as a “No Normal”: a shock that reveals the structural limits of the energy system, the fragility of supply chains, and the dependence on a model based on highly concentrated global flows.

The conference will address how these energy shocks impact prices, inflation, geopolitics, and social cohesion, as well as the lessons we should draw for the future. In a context of an unfinished energy transition, war and the blockade of Hormuz act as accelerators of a deeper crisis that forces us to rethink expectations, imagine scenarios of lower energy availability, and prepare collective responses in an increasingly unpredictable world.

About Jordi Solé Ollé: Researcher in climate, environment, ecology, and energy, with a degree in Physics (UB) and a PhD in Applied Physics (UPC). Scientist at ICM-CSIC and associate researcher at CREAF, he coordinates the European project MEDEAS. His research includes ocean physical processes, marine ecology, and energy resource modeling.
